Inauguration of the restoration of the mural paintings by Giotto and the Master of Figline, carried out by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure of Florence within the framework of the agreement with the Japanese University of Kanazawa and thanks to the generous financial contribution of Professor Takaharu Miyashita.
This is an important testimony to the love that binds Professor Miyashita to the city of Florence. The restoration was possible thanks to his choice to donate the inheritance left by his parents for the conservation of the art masterpieces of a city in which Miyashita himself lived from 1973 to 1984 and where he obtained a post-university specialization with Alessandro Parronchi , subsequently collaborating with Fosco Maraini.
The fundamental financial contribution for this new intervention came to the Opera di Santa Croce directly from Professor Miyashita, who since 2005 has also followed, on behalf of the Japanese University of Kanazawa, the works of the large construction site of the Main Chapel.
The initial value of €245,000.00, supported equally by Professor Miyashita and the Opera di Santa Croce, was supplemented by funds made available by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure.
“The major restoration interventions on the wall paintings in the Main Chapel of the Basilica, carried out thanks to the contribution of the high competence and professionalism of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, conclude today with this important operation of recovery of the wall paintings that Giotto and the Master of Figline painted on the external and front bands of the Chapel: on the right side, the Giotto-esque depiction of Saint Francis receiving the stigmata; on the left, the image of the Assumption surrounded by angels, the work of the Master of Figline”, declared Stefania Fuscagni, President of the Opera di Santa Croce.
